Gooseberry

Gooseberries can be red, yellow, green or white. Those cultivated in the Netherlands are usually red. Yellow, green and white ones are often imported. Gooseberries have a refreshing, sweet to tart flavour and yellow, jelly-like flesh. They may be hairy or smooth, round or oval.

Gooseberry cultivation

Dutch gooseberries are harvested from June until the end of August. The berries are larger than the redcurrants, white currants and blackcurrants from the Ribes genus. Gooseberries grow on large shrubs of up to 1.50 metres wide. A bush may live up to 15 years and its branches are thickly set with sharp spines. That’s one of the few disadvantages of this berry.

Blackcurrants belong to the genus of Ribes. They are sweet berries, with an aroma that is often referred to as ‘cassis’, which is why they are sometimes called cassis berries.
